The Craft Off - Event

I haven't updated for ages because I have been a bit busy moving house and ting, but now have the perfect excuse to start again:

This Sunday the gorgeous people at Spinsters Emporium and MerriMaking are joining forces to host a fabulously fun and seriously creative night of competitive crafting. The Craft Off takes place from 7pm at The Malt Cross, Nottingham.

Expect live music, drinking, dancing and general frolocking in a jungle of decorations. As for the crafting, they are keeping the competition brief secret until the night. But the Jungle theme suggests rain forests, giant snakes, birds of paradise, tigers, man eating flowers, sunshine Gods, totem poles, Tarzan, monkeys and more.

All craft materials are provided and there are prizes up for grabs including:

Lee - Package Design

I am almost tempted to buy something from LEE to get my hands on this re-usable bag, in which every scrap of paper can be-recycled after use and turned into this board-game and activity set. It's like a Happy Meal box on steroids.

Sue Blackwell - Artist

Su Blackwell is an artist and art director, working predominantly within the realm of paper.

She has worked for Nicole Farhi, Pilsner and O2 among others and I love the fairytale feel of her work. Find more amazing paper stuff here.

Bianca Chang

Here is a lovely video from Syney based paper artist Bianca Chang.

Her work is created by cutting with precision layer upon layer of sheets of paper. Oh Hai Dur steady hand.

Xavier Barrade for Dry the River

One of my favourite things about writing this blog is coming across things that I genuinely think are brilliantly creative and yet don't take a massive bank balance or a lot of resources to achieve -just some imagination and willingness to put in the hours.

So I loved discovering Xavier Barrade’s 3D posters for rock band Dry The River. Xavier spent over 35 hours creating each 3d poster, hand cutting all the pieces and gluing them together.

The finished result is an ad campaign that sticks out (ha!) from the rest. The video of people's reactions to the posters is great too.

Elizabeth Barrett, Luke Edge and Hattie Newman for Station Magazine

This spread is actually about a year old now, but I think the prop styling is still pretty forward thinking.

I found it when researching Hattie Newman's work, but it originally appeared in London based indie magazine 'Station'.

Hattie made the props and the shoot was styled Elizabeth Barrett with photography from Luke Edge.

Hattie Newman - Artist

Hattie Newman is an illustrator and set maker working in London. Inspired by all things charming and strange, she makes three dimensional works from paper, card and other materials.

I love how she manages to create such painstakingly creative, fairytale scenarios -that draw you in and spark your imagination- from what is essentially just a sheet of card and a bit of Pritt Stick.

Papervore Coffe Table Shredder - Product Design

You would think that writing this blog would help me keep an nice online record of everything I am inspired by, tucked away neatly online and accessible only via the click of a button.

But this sadly is not the way it works, instead, every time I see something remotely interesting; a flyer with an interesting print quality, a sandwich wrapper with a perfect colour green, a magazine tear out of a dress with amazing feather detail (the list goes on) I hoard it. This leads to a very messy studio, full of 'inspiration boxes' and piles of magazine several years old.

I have had some of this stuff for years and the emotional attachment is too much!! However the solution might lie here in papervore coffee table which combines a hand cranked paper shredder with a unique coffee table design. All, I need to do is convince myself that if it is still in the room (albeit in shredded form) then it isn't lost for ever and I can still absorb it's inspirational powers...hmmmm.

Sipho Mabona - Artist

Sipho Mabona is based in Lucerne, Switzerland and made his first paper plane aged only five.

Since then he has created hundreds of his own original origami designs and gone on to participate in numerous contests -including the Red Bull Paper Wings World Finals in Salzburg 2006- and has exhibited his work in galleries from Tokyo to Vancouver.

It has been a while since I posted anything 'paper' related, so I thought I would come back with something big.

What appeals to me about Mabonas work is how simple it looks in passing, many of the same white birds strung up in formation; and this in itself has a striking visual appeal. But it is when you get closer that you see the complexity of the work that goes into each model and that is what really sets his work apart.

Cara Barer - Photographer & Artist

Cara Barer's sculptures were first influenced by the chance finding of a copy of the Houston Yellow Pages on the street and since then her work has continued to evolve; blurring the line between object, sculpture, and photography.

She now continually searches for more books that are no longer in use in old bookshops and abandoned houses, and more methods to change their appearance, including paper folding and soaking them in the bathtub.

I know I have already posted an editorial from Volt 07 today (it's a good issue) but as I mentioned in the last post I love anything involving a bit of paper, especially if it is pritt-sticked to someones face. So I had to share this AWESOME beauty story with you.
