Travis Hopkins - Art Direction

This video created by Travis Hopkins for Buck 65 is comprised of over 60 fictional movie title cards which spell out the lyrics from the first verse of 'Superstars Don't Love'.

It works so brilliantly because the title design is spot on and the attention to detail is perfect. I particularly love the sequel titles for any line that repeats and the tracking at the beginning that took me right back to being a kid and having a VHS player

The Blaxploitation movement is often used as inspiration when creating design work with a retro, kitsch feel. Frequently parodied; the posters of that era got straight to the point showcasing guns, girls and action in a now humerous way.

Naming vintage art, famous monsters and bands Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails among his inspirations Justin currently creates beautifully bizarre and slightly humorous images for Rue Morgue Magazine.

I Met The Walrus

'I Met The Walrus' is nearly three years old now and I just found it again in my favorites on Youtube after forgetting amazing it is. Directed by Josh Raskin and produced by Jerry Levitan, the film's pen illustrations are by James Braithwaite and computer illustration is by Alex Kurina.

The dialogue is from an interview of John Lennon conducted in 1969, by a then 14 year old Jerry Levitan. It has appeared at numerous film festivals and won several awards including Best Animated Short from the American Film Institute and the Middle East International Film Festival. It was also nominated for an Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.



Someone on Youtube has also put the illustrations to the song 'Bin Laden' by Immortal Technique which I think works ok, but the pictures don't sync up quite as well obviously. You get the idea though and it is still a bit of a tune. Chhhheck it out...

Exploitation Poster Art

I was lent this book by a Nottingham tattoo artist, because I literally could not put it down while in his studio. It features loads of vintage film posters from exploitation films, with titles like: 'Black Tight Killers', 'What Becomes of the Children?' and 'I Was a Man' amongst many others. I have just posted a few of the posters but there are loads on many taboo subjects such as, race, homosexuality and gender reassignment, drug use, prison and bondage. Seriously, todays films are TAME in comparison.
